Ln 5 : The Chair
A. What happened to the visitor when he sat on the stool?
Since they had no other furniture, they gave the visitor a stool. The stool was unsteady and toppled if the weight was not placed exactly in the center. Before they could warn him, the visitor fell and rolled over. The author and his sister laughed, and his sister even mimicked the sub-judge. After that, the stout guest never returned.
B) Why did the family find it difficult to make a chair?
The family wanted to have a chair, but there was no chair in the village to use as a model, and no carpenter who knew how to make one. This made it very difficult to get a chair made.
C) What was grandmother’s suggestion of wood? Why?
Grandmother suggested using teak wood. She felt it was best because it was both light to move and strong enough to last.
D) How was the chair made and how did the villagers react to it?
The authorβs elder sister suggested that the chair should be colored like ripe sugarcane or dark like sesame oil cake. Everyone imagined a very comfortable chair, and so it was finally made. The news spread quickly, and villagers came in large numbers to see the new chair.
E. When did the children get over the fear of sitting on the chair?
One day, Suganthi from the neighboring street placed her baby brother on the chair. From then on, the children lost their fear of sitting on it.
F. Why did Maamanaar hand over the chair to the villagers to retain it?
Later, when the author saw Maamanaar sitting on the floor, he asked about the chair. Maamanaar explained that he had given it to the villagers to use for placing dead bodies, as he too would need it one day.
