12th English Prose Q & A 2026
Ln 6 : On the Rule of the Road
A. What is ‘liberty’ according to the old lady?
According to the old lady, liberty means she is free to do whatever she likes. She thinks she can walk anywhere, even on busy public roads, without following rules or caring about others’ rights and safety.
B) How would ‘liberty’ cause universal chaos?
If everyone behaved as they pleased in the name of liberty, it would disturb the freedom of others. For example, the old lady’s careless walking on the road forced motorists to stop suddenly, causing traffic jams and confusion. Such actions would create disorder and chaos in society.
C) Why is there a danger of the world getting ‘liberty drunk’?
When liberty crosses its limits, it turns dangerous. If everyone interferes with others’ rights in the name of liberty, it will lead to social disorder. People must understand the boundaries of their freedom. Otherwise, like the old lady, liberty can become harmful and unsafe for all.
D) Curtailment of private liberty is done to establish social order – Do you agree?
Yes. To maintain peace and harmony, individual liberty must be limited at times. For example, a policeman in Piccadilly Circus may stop one vehicle to let another pass. This small restriction prevents confusion and ensures smooth traffic. In the same way, curtailing personal liberty helps maintain social order.
